Thai Sub Title problem - Help in English please

Postby Gegs » Mon Sep 07, 2009 9:00 pm

Hi...am new to this forum and site...please help or point me in the right direction

I am running VLC on OS 10.5.8 (same problem occurs on Quicktime)

I am familiar with Subtitle .ssa and .srt files and can run them fine. However, whenever I download a Thai subtitle file and play it, I do not get Thai letters...I get strange characters. If I look at the file through the Mac text editor, the english file is fine but the Thai subtitle file has these same strange characters that show during movie playback

For example, James Bond Quantum of Solace .ssa sub file looks like this

English
[Events]
Format: Marked, Start, End, Style, Name, MarginL, MarginR, MarginV, Effect, Text
Dialogue: Marked=0,0:03:40.39,0:03:44.81,Default,,0000,0000,0000,,Siena, Italy.
Dialogue: Marked=0,0:04:06.84,0:04:08.59,Default,,0000,0000,0000,,It's time to get out.
Dialogue: Marked=0,0:07:37.13,0:07:39.05,Default,,0000,0000,0000,,Don't bleed to death.

Thai
[Events]
Format: Marked, Start, End, Style, Name, MarginL, MarginR, MarginV, Effect, Text
Dialogue: Marked=0,0:03:40.39,0:03:44.81,Default,,0000,0000,0000,,‡´’¬πË“, Õ‘µ“≈’
Dialogue: Marked=0,0:04:06.84,0:04:08.59,Default,,0000,0000,0000,,‰¥È‡«≈“ÕÕ°¡“·≈È«
Dialogue: Marked=0,0:07:37.13,0:07:39.05,Default,,0000,0000,0000,,լ˓„Àȇ≈◊Õ¥ÕÕ°®πµ“¬À≈Ë–

FYI...I have, of course, enabled Thai fonts on the MAC and can see and type Thai charactors

Sorry, if this is a simple issue...thanks in advance for any help

You need to load a program name Sisulizer's Kaboom The Conversion Utility
at - http://www.sisulizer.com. This program will help you converted sub's file

after you get the program, open tab : File converter
Sourcd filename is your sub's file,
codepage group : MS-DOS; Code page: Code page 00874- MS-DOS Thai

just ignore the middle parts

On the bottom there are another Codepage group/Code page
for Code page group choose UNICODE; Code page: UTF-8

leave the box in front of Write BOM - blank
Mark the box in front of Word wrap and Change content-type
Then click covert.... the save as box appear and choose where your want to save
the converted file

I wish these could help otherwise you need more of Thai fonts

Thank you for the Reply!!

I looked at this site and it looks like this "would" solve my problem. Unfortunately this software is Windows based and I use a Mac. Are there any similar programs in the MAC world?

If not, are there font files for the MAC that I can get to solve this? I already have standard Thai and Thai "Pattachote" fonts.

All help is appreciated!!

I'm not quite familiar w/Mac. Anyhow, couldn't you post and ask on that site.
I did learn from some hot link(I mean Cool Links) on the home page of this site.
Anyway, good luck.

I have posted this problem on the VLC forums board for both the Windows and MAC troubleshooting of Thai Subtitles...so far nobody has an answer...however another has expressed he same problem.

To be clear, .srt Thai files work fine in VLC but the .ssa files...which this site mostly produces...shows these strange characters both when looked at by a text editor or shown withing the player.

I am suprised nobody else has shared this problem on this site

Any suggestions? Anyone?

Thanks,
Gegs

The following was sent to me "dosboy" via PM

Hey. I tried replying to your thread but for some reason the board won't let me post. At any rate, check out the solution on my blog at http://dosboy.ca/2009/11/thai-subtitles-on-mac-osx.html. If it works for you, feel free to post it as a follow-up to your thread (I have no idea why it won't let me post ... just get some message in Thai ต้องขออภัยในความไม่สะดวกครับ ที่ไม่สามารถโพสได้ กรุณาติดต่อ which Google translates as "Apologize for the inconvenience ครับ. That can not be posted please.")

After following the links, this worked perfectly. It also works on VLC....yeah!!

Many thanks "dosboy"!!!
